The 5 food groups of Buenos Aires
Argentina is known as having spectacular food. I agree, it's absolutely fantastic and I could go on and on. I've had many of my best meals in Buenos Aires and certainly my longest meals! Probably half a dozen 4 hour dinners and nearly every other dinner was 2.5 - 3 hours. It's nice and relaxing and puts people back at the center of things, instead of your phone or next meeting.
The food was great, as I mentioned, but the interesting thing was the limited variety in an Argentine's diet. They seemed to exist on 5 types of foods. I remember as a kid, I would grow up with the 4 food groups, drilled into us from kindergarten.
Here are the 5 food groups of Argentina, in my humble opinion.
1) Start with what they're famous for, the beef. Ooh, it's so good! Happy cows make great steak and we ate a lot of it, just like the typical Argentine.
Next you have the wine, and you can't go wrong with a malbec from Mendoza!
Breakfast has to come somewhere, but perhaps because of all the meat and wine, the morning appetite is quite small. That's why they start their day with cafe (con leche) and a croissant (medialuna)
Tired of meat? The good news is Argentina has a strong Italian influence, and that means plenty of pastas and pizzettas (pizzas) for everyone!
And lastly, you can't be an Argentine without a sweet tooth, and they love their dessert. The most popular dessert is Dulce Del Leche, a caramel tasting topping that goes on just about everything!
