Thank God for MLB.TV
I've been a die hard Cubs fan since I was a little boy. It's been many years of losing and heartbreak. I was at the 2003 NLCS Game 6 (The Bartman Game), I remember cheering on Dawson, Dunston, and Grace in the 80s. I was there for Sosa and the homers in the 90s. I was there for Kerry Wood and the Ks and still think about "what-if" with Mark Prior. I was all-in during the Soriano years of '07 and '08. I can't tell you how many thousands of hours of my life have been spent attending games, reading boxscores, watching games on tv, or just reading articles about the Cubs. Whether I was in Chicago, Carbondale, Huntington Beach, or San Francisco, my fire for the team was always high. Unfortunately those years all ended in disappointment.
For those who don't know, the Cubs haven't won a world series since 1908 or even reached the world series since 1945. My Dad who is now retired wasn't even born yet!
Being a Cubs fan is hard, but it's the hard things that are worth the most.
When they win the world series, all of that will have made the victory that much sweeter. Seriously, what's the fun in rooting for the Yankees!
In 2012 The Cubs brought over Theo Epstein, the architect behind the Red Sox breaking the curse. Well, he's a genius, because he completely turned around the team with young superstars. In 2015 the Cubs made it all the way to the NLCS and completely overachieved.
Now, in 2016 the experts are predicting they'll finally win the world series. Their roster is fantastic and they are the undisputed best team in baseball (at least in June)
This so happens to collide with the year we're living abroad! I'm missing it!
However, there is this thing called MLB.TV and when the internet connection is strong enough, I've been able to stream games live and watch them. It's fantastic. The timezones can be a bit crazy. In Argentina, the games were usually on around 9pm, late, but do-able. In Asia, they're on in the early morning, so I wake up with scores rather than watching the games.
If the Cubs are going to pull it off this year, I'll need to be some place with an ultra fast internet connection and I'll wake up at 2am if I have to. Maybe I'll even be able to get a flight to Chicago and bite my nails with my fellow Chicagoans and hopefully be celebrating with them when it finally happens
Go Cubs!
UPDATE: Picture of me watching the 9th inning of a Cubbies game in Cambodia. Unfortunately they lost, but it was fun to watch!
